# Amigos internacionales: our friends abroad

> Medellín has plenty of friends, and so do we. These are a few of our favorite people and places outside Colombia, most of them on Costa Rica's southern Nicoya Peninsula, each with a few words on why we like them.

This page has been part of I Love Medellín since 2013. Back then we called it a list of our favorite websites from around the world, with a note to check them out and then come back to Medellín. That's still the deal. Most of our amigos live on the southern tip of Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, around Montezuma and Santa Teresa, so if you're pairing Colombia with Central America, start here. Every link was checked on 21 October 2026.

## Our friends in Costa Rica

### [Del Mar Adventures](https://delmaradventures.com/)

*Started with a surf camp, ended up with a whole country.*

Longtime readers knew this one as Del Mar Surf Camp. It's grown into a small company running retreats and personal trips around Costa Rica, built around surfing, yoga, wildlife and real time with local people, and it's especially welcoming to women traveling on their own. Worth a look if you want someone thoughtful to help plan the Costa Rica half of your trip.

### [Futuro Verde](https://futuro-verde.org/)

*Homework, but make it jungle.*

A bilingual international school near Santa Teresa that teaches kids from preschool all the way through 12th grade, with the IB program at its core and a strong environmental streak. We've cheered it on since its early days as a little eco school near Montezuma. If you're a family thinking about a longer stay on the peninsula, this is the place to start asking questions.

### [Luz en el Cielo](https://www.luzenelcielo.com/)

*The monkeys are included. The alarm clock is optional.*

An eco B&B, hostel and set of rental houses tucked into the trees just before the center of Montezuma. Breakfast is organic and made to order, the waves are close enough to hear at night, and the waterfalls are a short hike away. It has the easygoing, everybody-knows-everybody feel that made Montezuma famous in the first place.

### [Butterfly Brewing Company](https://montezumagardens.com/)

*Beer in one hand, butterfly on the other.*

You may remember this spot as the Montezuma Butterfly Gardens. The garden is still there, and now there's a small brewery too, plus a trail from the parking lot up to the Montezuma waterfalls. They give the profits from the butterfly garden to local conservation and community projects, which makes that second beer feel almost virtuous.

### [Zuma Tours](https://www.zumatours.net/)

*Skip the long drive. Take the boat.*

A long-running tour company in Montezuma that does a bit of everything: boat days to Tortuga Island, a zipline over the waterfalls, ATV rides, fishing trips and shuttles. Its best trick is the boat taxi across the Gulf of Nicoya between Jacó and Montezuma, which turns a long road trip into about an hour on the water.

## Back to Medellín

Done exploring? Our [things to do in Medellín](/things-to-do/) page is a good place to pick up where you left off, and there are a couple more links we like on our [links page](/links/).
